This is by far my favorite series for beginning guitar that I've looked at. The balance between rigor and "fun" is perfect, and it never moves too quickly. Other books try to get you playing full chords immediately, not paying attention to the fact that for a raw beginner this is a huge stumbling block and likely to discourage. The Alfred series builds up to them, string by string, while still keeping things interesting with a combination of classic tunes and theory/execution information. The third book is even better than the first two - it introduces brushing, fingerpicking, more double notes, diminished chords, bass patterns, more keys, and finally barre chords - and it builds up to each of these in a comforting way (with plenty of musical examples) for those used to other books which "teach" these concepts with half a page of chord diagrams. There really is a wide variety of styles, too, from folk and rock to Spanish and classical, yet the book retains a consistency which is totally lacking in newer methods (which sometimes seem to just want to cram in as many superficial topics as possible, without any regard for pedagogy or the learning curve). As an introduction to guitar I can't imagine doing much better.
