Real World Nikon Capture NX 2 Details
Capture NX 2 from Nikon is a powerful image-editing application that lets photographers work with digital photographs with more speed and efficiency than other software programs. Its underlying technology gives photographers the ability to make selective corrections to an image with just one click. "Real World Capture NX 2," written by digital photography expert Ben Long, takes photographers behind the scenes to see how this innovative program works. Along the way, Ben offers valuable tips and techniques for getting the most out of the software and digital cameras. Novice and expert photographers alike will benefit from Capture NX 2. New users can make advanced image corrections without learning sophisticated masking techniques. Advanced users can perform the complex edits they are accustomed to making in other programs in fewer steps. Any image corrections made with Capture NX 2 are non-destructive, which means that the actual image data is unaltered and reversible until the photographer achieves the best results. Photographers who use Nikon cameras have access to special software features for working with raw, JPEG and TIFF images.
Reviews
Great book, clearly written with good examples. However, the Nikon software it instructs you on is a dog. Almost every time I use it, my computer (Windows 7) crashes: I won't give the details, I am sick of them. I have called Nikon several times (they are always friendly and courteous) but they have no answer for the problem other than to send you an email saying, "we are sorry for the inconvenience". Don't waste your money on the Nikon software, get a copy of Photoshop Elements 5.0 or 8.0 instead: I started with 5.0 and shortly upgraded to 8.0. Both programs run just fine with no problems and they are both better then Capture: I was producing better photos in only a few hours of use with both of them.Bottom line, Elements does more and gives you headaches less. There are a number of excellent books available on using the older Elements packages: both for 5.0 and 8.0. Buy 2 or 3 of them for each program: every writer's approach is somewhat specialized and no two books seem to cover all the same details. If you buy 3 books (as I always do with the older software), you will probably cover all the bases that are relevant. By the time you read three books, you will be sufficiently knowledgeable in the use of 5.0 and/or 8.0 to improve your photos substantially. The difference in your work will be very noticeable.
